Podcast fans united by ringtone
Posted on February 24th, 2007 | by admin |INTERTUBES - A small group of net savvy podcast viewers are reportedly being united due to the recent release of Hak5 ringtones. Hak5 is a niche video podcast catering to hackers and tech enthusiasts with appetites ranging from unseasoned baked potato to spaghetti with meatballs, garlic bread and parmesan cheese.
Composer and wiki extraordinaire Ashley Witt released the tones on the Hak5 forums to much fanfare this Friday. “I don’t do cellphones, and yes, I’m the only person in L.A. that doesn’t,” said Witt on the forums. It is speculated that Witt’s dislike of cellphones can be traced back to the PacBell Spinich incident of 1996.
While adoption of the ringtones have been slow among the greater Hak5 fanbase, the true power of these 64 kilobit mono MP3s are already being seen in New York by Hak5’s Zombie and Ninja class community members.
Neochives, a Hak5 Ninja with nearly 600 posts comments “LMFAO! I was at a DofE training class today (11am to 9pm [killer]) and my phone went off and immediately the instructor went, \”hak5! thats a good show\”". Not surprisingly the uniquely quirky web show Hak5 is extremely popular among DofE instructors. “Hak5 is like a thin crust chicken, black olive and mushroom pizza, but better!” said one DofE instructor in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The sightings continued this weekend when omega_ion, a Hak5 Zombie from New York commented “LOL, something similar to that happened to me today. I was at a mall and my phone goes off, and one guy gave me a look that said \”Hak5, Sweet!\”". While yet to be proven it is a commonly accepted truth that Hak5, the “better than pizza” web show, is very popular among urban mall-dwellers. Especially around the food court near the addictively delicious asian buffet.
As the community continues to embrace the Hak5 ringtones as another extension of their technolust it is yet to be seen how well they hold up while sauteed with onions and green peppers.
