For Shame

Tomorrow is the big day! I’ll see if the users can adapt to the new network. Hu? Oh yeah….

Rewind

I’ve been in D.C. (Vienna actually) for the last 2 days doing awesome IT ninja stuff. We’re moving into a new office, a much nicer, much bigger, much more awesome new office. And to go with the spiffy new office I’ve been setting up the spiffiest network. This things beefy. Well, its not Data Center or NOC (Network Operation Center), but its a big upgrade from the last closet of a server room I had before. Ok, well, its more like 3 times the size of your standard network closet, but I can fit network gear, servers, a desk, a chair, and um, me in it and still manage to close the door. Throw in a light and some music and its a geek party.

I’ve been documenting the whole trip, and I’ll be coming back with a super-special update next week that’s going to rock your socks off.

So, there’ve been some snags, but I think I’ve worked most of them out. Well, they’re all the network consultant dudes fault anyway. I had the network all shiny, but then all the sudden the subnets weren’t speaking TCP to each other, the DHCP server was bogarding the IP addresses, DNS was being a freak and forgetting who’s who… Oh, and the wireless network couldn’t make up its mind if it was secure or open. Got it taken care of though, and now the server’s are purring.

Aside from the fact that I’ve only got 48 network cables for a 96 port network, and um, that whole thing about the DSL that MCI installed topping out at 32 KiloBYTES per second… Yeah, that’s going to suck. Know what 32KB/s divided by 30 employees equals? Hehe, yeah, me too. Crosses fingers.

I feel bad for them too, they’re not your typical (L)users. A lot of them come from engineering backgrounds so they know what’s up. Hell, my CEO coded in FORTRAN, and my boss taught C++. I had to pull the firewall / router out of the old office Wednesday so I could set it up here in the new office. I replaced it with a cheapo linksys router to keep ‘em going for the next 2 days. Now I know the difference between a $50 router and a $1000 router… Yeah… The Linksys works, um, sorta. Well, it routes packets. That’s always a plus when purchasing a router. Packets get from point A to point B. Most of the time… slowly…

But I’m sure the employees will be happy with the new office, and the new network. The fast and tuned network powered by a 4 stack of DELL PowerConnect’s with gigabit uplinks, a Watchguard Firebox 700, a PowerEdge 2600, and two ORiNOCO AP-600 wireless access points. Yeah baby, Cat5 to the max…

With 32KB/s for everyone to share. CRIES.

Like I said, big day tomorrow. Employees move in and if I can make it through the day it will be totally worth it to come home and eat some real food, sleep in my own bed, and see that special someone.

Again, stay tuned for a special recap report when I get back that’ll knock your socks off.

Yeah we had an issue like that on our network. Turns out someone dumbass brought in one some Radioshack router from home onto our network (God knows why?) and not only did it try to re-synch the network, but it couldn’t read our IPs and decided to re-IP all the nodes it reached for us. JOY!

Yeah, if you ever want to have a lot of fun on a network, throw in more than one DHCP server and watch them fight for control over the IP tables. I’ve seen a linksys put up a good fight against a cisco.

got an update from MCI on the DSL. 384k is the best they can do with SDSL. they suggested a dedicated T1 for *only* $680/mo with a $2000 cisco router. riiiiiiiiiiiight… looking at alternatives.

had the sales guy swearing up and down that a T1 is 1.544 MBps instead of Mbps. I quoted the CCITT blue book (the one that doesn’t fit on a shelf) and he undertands now.

    will work for bandwidth.
